10 Anticipated 2017 Movies That Have Already Lost The Oscar Race

1. Mudbound

The Buzz: Since it first premiered at Sundance, this period drama from director Dee Rees (Pariah) has received consistently strong critical acclaim and been considered one of the Sundance movies most likely to drag itself all the way to the Oscar finish line.

So, if it's well-reviewed across-the-board, then, what's the problem?

Why It's Already Lost: One word: Netflix. Mudbound was acquired by Netflix and releases on the streaming platform on November 17th worldwide, but considering how notoriously terrible Netflix is at publicising even their bigger releases, it seems unlikely that Mudbound will get the push it needs to capture the Academy's attention.

The film will no doubt get a small qualifying theatrical run to qualify for Oscar voting, but given that Netflix has only one Oscar to its name to date, a Best Documentary Short win for last year's The White Helmets, it doesn't seem likely that they're going to make the most of this.

Plus, even if Netflix steps up with a huge awards campaign for the movie, many voters are still prejudiced against films streaming day-and-date, so might not want to vote for it on principle.

What are your early predictions for next year's Best Picture Oscar nominees? Shout them out in the comments!
