10 Anticipated 2017 Movies That Have Already Lost The Oscar Race
9. Downsizing
The Buzz: The latest comedy from Alexander Payne attracted plenty of hype out of the gate because Payne's movies are typically a magnet for Oscar nominations, with his last three films (Sideways, The Descendants and Nebraska) all earning Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay nods in particular.
Why It's Already Lost: Festival reviews have broadly praised the film, about a man (Matt Damon) who shrinks himself in order to escape to a better life, but the reception is decidedly more mixed than almost all of Payne's movies, and so it seems that he may end up missing out on even a single nomination this time.
Again, not a bad movie, but not up to the filmmaker's impeccable usual standard.
