10 Anticipated Movie Sequels Stuck In Development Hell
6. Alita: Battle Angel 2
When a manga series is adapted as a big-budget live-action film, results are often mixed, typically leaving a lot to be desired. However, Alita: Battle Angel, though not exactly lighting the box office on fire, did find itself a loyal army of fans.
The blockbuster, directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron, and featuring a stacked cast, has seen said army eagerly, and not exactly patiently, awaiting news of a sequel. Particularly as the film ended on a cliffhanger, and with plenty of story left to tell, a follow-up may even have the chance to be even more successful than its predecessor.
It seems as though almost every major player is on board with returning for another round, especially star Rosa Salazar, as well as both Rodriguez and Cameron. Despite that, there is one pretty big obstacle getting in the way.
Naturally, James Cameron's time is mostly taken up by Avatar, which is what happens when a franchise sees as much success as that one has and when there are as many promised sequels as there are. Of course, the work on Avatar takes precedence over an Alita sequel, and with Avatar: Fire and Ash set to release this December, and Avatars 4 and 5 coming in 2029 and 2031 respectively, it doesn't look like this situation will change any time soon.
