10 Army Of The Dead Easter Eggs You Totally Missed

3. The Gotterdammerung Vault

One of the more interesting fan theories that arose following the film's release is that its events are part of a time loop. This is supported by the fact that the crew finds the remains of an older team near the sealed vault and that this team's outfits are eerily similar to that of the current crew led by Scott Ward.

This theory is lent even more credence by Vanderohe's uncanny knowledge of the zombie society as well as various team members displaying more skill than they originally let on. The owner of the vault, Bly Tanaka, is also posited as a master manipulator of sorts that is controlling the sequence of events. Interestingly, the name of the vault is Gotterdammerung, and this acts as a reference to the Ring of the Nibelung, a 19th-century opera composed by Richard Wagner.

The word roughly translates to "Twilight of the Gods" and symbolizes the death and rebirth of the gods. This is more or less in line with the fan theory and hints at a larger story, one that Snyder has not explicitly confirmed nor denied. Hopefully, he will explore this in future films as it is a concept that has the potential to elevate this new franchise.
