10 Artists Who Made Entire Movie Soundtracks
6. Into the Wild - Eddie Vedder
As the Seattle scene was starting to really sink its teeth into the rock scene, Eddie Vedder always seemed like the odd man out. This was the kind of music that came from the rainy city up in Washington, and here was this surfer dude coming up from San Diego with the same amount of angst and aggression in his voice. Eddie did have a mellower side to him, and his turn soundtracking Into the Wild gave us another look at the guy who shrieked his guts out on songs like Jeremy.
Before anyone gets any hangups about this, it's not like Eddie just went ahead and wrote a James Taylor record for Into the Wild or anything. Going through the entire record, Vedder does break out some of his rock chops like Hard Sun, but the rock side of his sound is not really meant to be the focus of the record. The whole story behind Into the Wild is about being among nature, and there's a much more elemental feel with this record, like Eddie took the kind of feeling that you would hear on Oceans from Ten and turning that into an entire record's worth of great songs.
While things don't end well for Christopher by the end of the movie, this is the kind of material that makes you feel like you can conquer the world. Even if you were to remove these songs from the movie entirely, this is the kind of record that feels like it's reserved for the road warriors of the world, embarking on an adventure and having the whole world ahead of you.
