10 Artists Who Made Entire Movie Soundtracks
7. She's the One - Tom Petty
Coming out of his first sessions with Rick Rubin, Tom Petty had more than enough quality material to make a double albums with Wildflowers. For all of the great songs that turned up on the proper album, there were definitely a handful that had to be left of the cutting room floor, some of which could have easily been any other band's greatest hit. When the producers of She's the One asked Tom to contribute to the soundtrack, those stray songs ended up getting put to good use.
While there are some clear leftovers here and there from Wildflowers like the song Walls, each one of these tracks feel like a more mellow version of what was going on on that record, with songs that feel a lot more ramshackle like Climb That Hill of Zero From Outer Space. When Tom does break out the ballads though, he does add his own slant to it, like covering Beck on Ass*ole or bringing in Ringo Starr and Carl Wilson to play on the last track Hung Up and Overdue.
Though none of these songs were really written with the movie in mind, Tom's style of writing fits pretty well into the movie format, having just enough open lyrics to put your own experiences into it. You may not need to know the ins and outs of a song like California or Hope on Board, but the minute that you hear the song play out, you can practically see the picture being painted in your head.
