9. The Ring

Unleashed in 1998, The Ring was directed by Hideo Nakata, and stars Nanako Matsushima and Hiroyuki Sanada. This '90s classic horror gem set the tone for many horror films to come (including a later US remake), so influential was the release. There will be few horror fanatics who haven't seen The Ring - or at the very least know the premise - but a list of the best Asian horror films would simply not be complete without it.

The Ring (also known as Ringu) tells the story of a cursed video tape; legend has it that that if you watch the video, you will receive a creepy phone call telling you that you have only seven days left to live. A very creepy plot unfolds as we follow a group of teenage friends who have watched the tape and who slowly get picked off one by one due to the curse.

Intent on finding out what causes the curse, and desperate to try and save herself, central character Reiko tries to uncover the source of the horror and to fight back against the vengeful spirit trying to take her life. Whilst the US remake was certainly a worthy contender, the original is outstanding.
