10 Awesome 2014 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween
2. The Babadook
The Pitch: Sitting at a mighty 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, this fiendishly original Aussie horror flick revolves around a mother and son being haunted by a monster from a book, but is The Babadook real, or just an embodiment of the loss of their respective husband and father years earlier? Why It's Awesome: Haunted house movies have been done to death by now, and it's so refreshing to see a unique take on the subject, even if it can't help but indulge in a few familiar genre tropes here and there itself. What really makes this one stick in the mind, though, is writer-director Jennifer Kent's atmospheric scene-setting, smart psychology, and two electric central performances that are easily among the best and most memorable that the genre has seen in quite some time. It might not live up to the bombastic expectations of those reared on lame-brained studio horrors, but with its artful, character-driven approach to horror, The Babadook is an intriguing, curious treat.
