The Pitch: Not a traditional horror film in the strictest sense but easily the most horrifying and brilliant film on release at the moment (it sure beats Ouija...), Jake Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, an out-of-work young man who begins freelancing as a "journalist", recording crime scene videos to sell to the highest, most bloody-thirsty news outlet. His ambition takes him down a dangerous path which sees him becoming ferociously obsessed with building a media career for himself. Why It's Awesome: A marvelously intelligent, darkly comic look at the sensationalist nature of news media and the audience's grim thirst for it, Nightcrawler is one of the smartest and most ludicrously entertaining films of the year. It also happens to be utterly terrifying, thanks largely to Gyllenhaal's lizard-like, Oscar-worthy performance in the central role, playing a supreme slimeball whose shameless ambition only becomes disturbing the longer it gets rewarded. Though there aren't any supernatural beasties or masked slashers to be found here, as a look into humanity's dark soul, there is no film more scary this year so far.
