9. Deliver Us From Evil

The Pitch: Scott Derickson (Sinister) writes and directs a paranormal horror flick that also has aspirations to the crime thriller genre, with a cast led by Eric Bana and including Olivia Munn, Edgar Ramirez, Joe McHale and Sean Harris. Why It's Awesome: Derickson takes a relatively conventional demonic possession plot and imbues it with a ton of style, a number of great performances (especially Bana and Ramirez) and the cop drama element to make this an entertaining horror pic that actively avoids a number of genre stereotypes. It's slightly too long perhaps, but the refreshing mixture of tones, fluctuating between darkness and light (with some hilarious comic relief from McHale), keeps it intriguing right to its insane final act. Fun fact: Derickson has also been hand-picked to direct Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange.
