10 Awesome 2014 Horror Movies To Watch This Halloween

4. The Town That Dreaded Sundown

The Pitch: At once a remake and a sequel to the 1976 cult horror classic of the same name, the new Town That Dreaded Sundown takes place in a contemporary setting where both the real-life 1940s killings and the 1976 movie both exist, and serve as apparent inspiration for a new spate of copycat killings. Why It's Awesome: Meta-horror is always good for a laugh, and Sundown has fun incorporating the previous film into its own story, all while functioning well solo for those who haven't seen the original movie. With impressive visuals, unexpectedly smart characters and some fun kills that reference the demented original, this is arguably a rare remake (especially in the horror arena) that manages to out-do what came before. It might lack the 70s scuzziness and rough edges of the original, but it's a much smarter and better-constructed film. Hopefully in another four decades, someone will get the joke and remake it again.
