Teen heartthrob movies have been a staple since the 1950s, when the young emerged as consumers on the media market. Even in the lightest fare, like Gidget or whatnot, the characters face serious issues specific to the real challenges of young adults, but perhaps what separates the more from the less enthralling has the most to do with the devotion of the actor, and his level of authentic relation with the topics. That's part of why Rebel Without a Cause is etched into memory, and My Own Private Idaho too.
It's director Gus Van Sandt's third film, a loose Henry V adaptation about two teen prostitutes, played by Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix. Phoenix is brilliant in the film, and immersed himself in the role, hanging out with hustlers and allegedly even beginning to use hard drugs. He even wrote a scene himself, in which he laments his lack of a normal family or childhood identity, in a personal confession.
While Keanu tries his chops at some awkward Shakespearean acting to be repeated throughout his career, he still finds himself at home in the film. Both he and Phoenix have a sense of humor about teen idolatry, particularly in a memorable scene where they pose for some skin magazines.
The film was also very early in Hollywood to depict a homosexual relationship in a tender, normalized, and relatable manner. Finally, it features the amazing Udo Kier, who at one point performs a piece from his old cabaret act in his apartment.
