10 Awesome 90s Movies You've Probably Never Seen
4. The Rainbow Thief (1990)
Visionary, psychedelic filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky had semi-retired since he had the plug pulled on his adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune in the mid 70s. The early 80s and early 90s saw an odd departure for him, whimsical children's features, and "The Rainbow Thief"is partially a continuation of this theme. It also marks a dark period for Jodorowsky, when a foray into the commercial meant a sacrifice of his artistic control. Despite these odds, however, the film is still marked by his idiosyncratic brilliance.
For starters, The Rainbow Thief reunites Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif, nearly 30 years after Lawrence of Arabia. They play two con artists who dwell together in the sewer (exquisitely furnished, including a chandelier), waiting to inherit a fortune from an eccentric millionaire played by Christopher Lee.
The film can appeal to those unfamiliar with Jodorowsky's ouvre, but part of what makes the film interesting is the search for those surreal shadows beneath the palatable surface. Of course, The Rainbow Thief is also anomalous as the director's only film to include famous actors, let alone legendary ones.
