Truth be told, perhaps a lot of people here did see this film, considering its massive success upon release. But blockbuster documentaries are uncommon enough to merit some special attention, and this is one example of a film that remains relevant beyond its time.

The film tells the life story of Robert Crumb, the American cartoonist who achieved widespread popularity in the late 1960s for his Keep on Truckin' coinage, but overall wan a vanguard of the DIY comic movement of the time, as well as a shift on focus from fantasy to introspective, autobiographical, and often banal subject matter.

The film is directed by Terry Zwigoff (Ghost World, Bad Santa), who's made only six movies in his career. Crumb is also special in that the illustrator is fairly reclusive when it comes to media attention, and is even preparing to expatriate by the film's end. Crumb has a bounty of interesting vignettes and material from the artist's own life, and his two brothers are equally as eccentric and enjoyable to listen to.

His older brother lives at home with their mother and is a talented illustrator himself, as well as a careful archivist of all their childhood comics. And Crumb's younger brother is shut in an entirely unfurnished apartment, producing brilliant paintings. They all have some pretty serious hangups, but the doc doesn't miss out on the humorous side to it all.
