3. Hello Bambi

hello_bambi

Director: Faiyaz Jafri (USA) According to Jafri, the story goes that Snow White has taken a bite of a poisoned apple and is now en route to the emergency room. What we are seeing is her final dream. Although we never find out what was in the apple, judging by the subsequent headtrip those mushrooms don't exactly seem wide off the mark. A girl sits with an apple hovering above her palm, her face concealed by a Darth Vader helmet. A Delorean flies through cyberspace. Such iconic movie references both enter and exit the screen with nothing in the way of explanation. Does it matter? Probably not. But then nothing really does in this eye-popping oddity. A runaway train zooms through a kaleidoscopic tunnel. It certainly looks nice but don't ask me what it's supposed to mean. And God knows what Bambi has to do with all of this. Everything has an impossibly shiny plastic veneer and is soundtracked (or as Jafri himself puts it, €˜respectfully assaulted€™) by a techno version of Chopin€™s Funeral March. It sounds awful, I know, like a pop-culture collage that even Andy Warhol would dismiss as too tacky. And yet you can't take your eyes off the screen...
