10 Awesome Cyborgs in Movie History

8. Gigan - Godzilla vs Gigan (1972)

In my first two articles about robots, I avoided any reference to MechaGodzilla because, even though I love the Godzilla films, I find them a little silly. I already broke my anti-silliness and included MechaGodzilla and MechaniKong in a followup article about movie robots, so I guess I'm free to use Gigan in this article. Besides, Gigan is such an over-the-top cyborg with his buzz-saw stomach that I couldn't leave him out.

7. Garth A7 - Cyborg 2087 (1966)

In the year 2087, freedom of thought is illegal and your thoughts are controlled by the government (gee, almost like governments nowadays, eh?). A group of "free thinkers" sends a cyborg (Garth A7 - played by Michael Rennie who was Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still) back in time to 1966 to prevent the scientific breakthrough that leads to thought control. As expected, Garth soon discovers the government has sent its own cyborgs back in time to prevent him from accomplishing his mission. When watching this film, you can't help but think of The Terminator. Apart from the main plot similarities, you'll also see Garth showing off his robotic arm and see him showing the electronics embedded in his chest. James Cameron admitted his stole the idea for The Terminator from a couple of Harlan Ellison episodes of The Outer Limits. I wonder if he took some inspiration from Cyborg 2087 as well?
