10 Awesome Directors Who Went Totally Insane (For One Movie)

8. Wes Craven - Music of the Heart (1999)

Music of the Heart Here's a brief stint of "insanity" that wasn't insane by conventional standards, but was still totally insane because it involved horror maestro Wes Craven suddenly dropping his occult roots to direct Meryl Streep in a movie about a teacher who coaches inner city school kids how to violin. That's right: how to violin. So although most of us who saw the poster for this one (branded with "Directed By Wes Craven") suspected a mid-movie twist where Streep was secretly a serial killer or something, what we got was... well, yeah, the violin teacher movie. To date, this is Wes Craven's only foray outside of the genre that he helped to define, which makes it an obsure kind of curiosity admist his otherwise blood-soaked filmography. Fact is, had this movie been a critical disaster, this might have been considered an even bigger turn of craziness, but as it stands Music of the Heart is considered to be an okay movie, if not a bit generic. You know a director is pretty sick and twisted if they're branded temporarily insane for directing a nice little movie like this. As it stands, this is Craven's mad moment.
