7. Guy Richie - Swept Away (2002)
Guy Richie has spent much of his career filling in that universal need for movies about cockney geezers facing up to cockney geezer-related problems. If you live in London and you talk with that accent, you'll obviously be familiar with those problems, but most of them involve heists, swearing and scenes of casual violence. Having made three movies in this vein in
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,
Snatch and
Mean Machine, Guy Ritchie woke up one day and decided he was insane and that he should make a movie starring Madonna. Madonna, of course, was his wife at the time, so there's that. Why would you make a movie with your wife, first of all?
Especially if your wife was Madonna. Still, like I said, Guy Ritchie was insane at this point, so I guess none of that matters. The film that he decided to make was - for reasons that cannot and will never be explained - a remake of
Swept Away, a movie from 1974 about two people who end up on a deserted island and have sex with one another. This is a rom-com, by the way. Guy Ritchie wrote and directed a rom-com. Scientists are still working on the "why."
