This particular theory is just so damn cool and one person put so much work into it that credit for it has to be specifically directed at that one man: Robert Lockard. Lockard theorises that the entire Back To The Future franchise is one big chiasmus. To explain what a chiasmus is, look no further than the famous nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock; A) Hickory dickory dock, B) The mouse ran up the clock, C) The clock struck one, B) The mouse ran down, A) Hickory dickory dock. It is essentially a writing structure in which ideas are listed in one order and then repeated in the opposite order to form the complete piece. With regards to Back To The Future, Lockard states that the first movie and the third movie are symmetrical to each other and the middle movie is symmetrical in itself, thus creating perfect symmetry as a complete unit. His theory can be found here and goes into a ludicrous amount of detail, with the general gist being that the first movie starts with Marty McFly being blown back by Doc Browns amplifier and then talking with Doc on the phone, and the last movie ends with Marty McFly and Jennifer being blown back by Docs new time machine and then talking with Doc one last time. Every other event that happens from start to finish also mirrors an opposing event at the other end. That is heavy.
