10 Awesome Fan Theories That Improve The Back To The Future Movies
4. The "Marty Martyr" Theory
Towards the end of Back To The Future, Marty McFly returns to 1985 and watches Doc Brown send his alternate self back in time. While most people assume that this is part of a loop that will infinitely see Marty McFly ("Marty A") returning to 1985 and watching himself travel back to 1955, some fans believe he was actually witnessing Doc send the other Marty ("Marty B") off to his death. The logic behind the theory is that Doc was adamant that two versions of one person meeting would result in the destruction of the universe and knowing that two of them would be in such close proximity to each other (particularly on an infinite loop, leaving endless opportunities for them to meet) was too dangerous. As a result, he had convinced Marty B that, in order for the other version of himself to live (and the universe to survive), he should willingly make a one way trip to his death to avoid a paradox. He was, therefore, a Marty martyr. A more sinister theory actually suggests that Doc Brown didn't tell that version of Marty that he was sending him to his death, making the whole series much more sinister.
