Based on the fact that Richard Kelly - the director of Donnie Darko - is a self-confessed fan of the Back To The Future franchise, there is a fan theory that his movie was originally written as a sort of Back To The Future fan fiction. As a fan, Kelly subscribed to the previous theory that Marty McFly was a Martyr, So he wrote his own version about a teenager who was convinced to kill himself so that his family, his love interest and the entire universe could live on. Essentially, if you replace Doc Brown with Frank the creepy bunny, Marty with Donnie, and Jennifer with Gretchen, you've got the same plot.
