9. Dredd
Budget: $45,000,000 Worldwide Box Office: $36,500,000
After the rather lacklustre 1995 effort starring Sylvester Stallone (the one where he has his helmet off) the Dredd series needed something of a rethink when a reboot was announced. Initially expectations were low, but Dredd became something of a surprise hit, being a straight up action thriller that was genuinely exciting to witness, something that is becoming too uncommon in film today. Directed by Pete Travis and starring Karl Urban as the eponymous Dredd, Urban brings an emotional integrity to the role Stallone never seemed to grasp, providing a more gritty and mean disposition that actually typifies the character of the law enforcer. With the film also utilising impressive slow-motion effects that do not outstay their welcome and an almost psychotic love of blood shed that is thrilling to experience, the film was an honourable effort to the numerous collective of comic-book adaptations. However, like with other films on this list, Dredd was only predominantly seen by fans of the Judge Dredd series, with the film failing to attract many outsiders that would normally be drafted in through advertising. From the budget of $45 million, the film performed poorly and was barely in cinemas for a month, reaching a worldwide total of $36 million. All is not lost though. Despite these poor box office takings, plans for a sequel have been developing ever since Dredd was critically applauded and went down well with fans. Heres hoping the Dredd franchise isnt dead yet.
