3. Christina Is The Real Target - Les Diaboliques
A French film released in 1955, Les Diaboliques is a classic of the genre that gets under your skin with each dastardly twist on the suspense format - building inch by inch until it unravels in a showy twist that undermines everything you've been lead to believe. When an old nasty headteacher of a boarding school, Michel, gets too big for his boots, his wife Christina and her lover Nichole decide to take action against him - namely killing him off to end his reign of physical and emotional abuse to all those close to him.
The pair decide to drown him in their bathtub, and then throw the body in the school's pool to appear as if he died by accident. Only, the next day when the body should have been discovered by the police, they've got a completely different person. Christina is slowly plagued by her dead husband's presence as she tries to carry on with her life, with the end seeing him reappear in the flesh - alive and well - out of the bathtub she drowned him in.
Turns out Nicole had other plans for Christina and it was all a ruse to quite literally scare her to death, rather than just enacting the whole plan on her in the first place. Well, that's one way of doing it...
