10 Awesome Horror Movie Twists You Never Saw Coming
2. Half Of The Family Are Hallucinations - A Tale Of Two Sisters
A Tale Of Two Sisters is one of those lasting pieces of cinema that has been taken and reformed for Western audiences into a subpar remake, then cut up and divided off as films have ripped off its premise in lesser forms ever since. Where most might be familiar with The Uninvited, A Tale Of Two Sisters stands as the OG Dissociative Identity Disorder masterpiece - relaying Su-mi's experience of coming home to a broken household as she returns from a stint in a psychiatric hospital.
Su-mi is forced to repeatedly protect her younger sister Su-yeon from their abusive step mother, Eun-joo, much to the despair of her father. Attempting to assimilate back into normal life with this new woman in her home is difficult, and Su-mi repeatedly suffers from strange, supernatural occurrences whilst trying to survive in her household.
Only, at the end of the film, we discover that Su-yeon doesn't actually exist. She'd died in a tragic accident after discovering their biological mother's suicide in her closet, causing Su-mi's mind to fracture into multiple personalities to make up for her loss. Su-mi's sister and step mother are all a fabrication, eventually leading us to the truth behind Su-mi's mental state from losing half her family in one fell swoop.
It's dark, psychological, and takes you completely by surprise. There's a reason this movie is one of the most hailed pieces of Asian cinema out there.
