7. The It Follows Virus Can't Manage Doors

David Robert Mitchell's directorial hit It Follows is a curious film. It's both timeless and current, with modern technology but a 1980s atmosphere and mood. The premise is fairly ingenious: a demonic STD that will kill those infected, slowly walking toward its intended victim, seemingly unstoppable and able to appear as anyone it wants. You could move to Debuke and it'd slowly walk there, not even bothering to hail a cab. Even if you pass the STD on to someone else, it'll realign its focus back to you once it disposes of its latest assignment.

This makes the 1980s feel even more relevant, given the rise and fear of the AIDS virus during the decade.

There's no reason, however, for the unstoppable evil to have so much trouble with doors. Even when it can easily just knock or turn a handle - or even screw with an Am Ex card for a minute, it takes the path of most resistance. When tracking down one victim, it smashes a window to get inside, ignoring the very concept of door entry. When the protagonists hole up in a shed, it starts to bash a whole in the weak wood before getting tired and seemingly just giving up.

Your best bet is to take a flight somewhere and not join the mile-high club, because it also can't seem to fly.

Kenny Hedges is carbon-based. So I suppose a simple top 5 in no order will do: Halloween, Crimes and Misdemeanors, L.A. Confidential, Billy Liar, Blow Out He has his own website - thefilmreal.com - and is always looking for new writers with differing views to broaden the discussion.
