Captain America: The Winter Soldier is about as good as MCU movies get, but here's a sequence that would've made it that little bit better.

Hell, it's a sequence that Marvel Studios liked so much, that it was still in the film two months before shooting began, only being axed at the very last minute.

In a 2020 interview, directors the Russo Brothers revealed that The Winter Soldier originally opened with a battle set during World War II, which would've concluded with a "significant moment" for Cap, directly feeding into the rest of the movie's story.

The filmmaking duo described the battle as "massive", indicating that it would've been several minutes long, as opposed to a couple of quick flashback shots.

From the Civil War airport fight to Endgame's battle for Earth, the Russo Brothers have delivered some of the best brawls in the MCU, so it would've been amazing to see their take on a battle set during the Second World War. And with The Winter Soldier exploring how Cap's old-fashioned sensibilities clash with the modern world, an opening like this would've only added to the film's thematic richness.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
