10 Awesome Moments From The Lego Movie

2. The Man Upstairs

The Lego Movie could have simply been a movie contained within the Lego universe and it still would have been a masterpiece, but Lord and Miller took it one step closer to the Toy Story dimension by engaging with the forces which give the Lego toys life, and of course I'm referring to human beings. Throughout the movie, "The Man Upstairs" is referenced, and it's only in the final quarter-hour that we realise who it is: the human creator of Bricksburg, played by Will Ferrell himself after Emmet falls into the "hole of infinity" and ends up in the real world. From here, we see that Ferrell's son Finn created Lord Business in his father's likeness, and the feud between Emmet and Lord Business essentially reflects the war between order and creativity that Finn has with his father (who believes everything should be glued in its place). Not only is this entire section of the movie a huge surprise, it's also extremely clever, and a surprisingly emotional testament to the power of the imagination, as Finn and his dad finally bond together while creating Lego. All this and it still doesn't feel overtly like an advert for Lego: how is that possible?
