3. RoboCop (1987)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FftEeQmuDWM Paul Verhoeven's classic cyberpunk flick is a delightful satire of America and a bleak view of humanity, but it is especially remembered for its unflinchingly brutal and graphic action set pieces. From the poor employee volunteered to try the ED-209s adequacy to prevent crime, to the horrific demise of the main character, the camera never shies away from the explicit violence depicted on screen. Verhoeven's direction is bursting with impact and the film is full of vivid imagery. One of the most gruesome death scenes occurs when one of the bad guys crashes into a tank full of toxic waste. When he comes out of his truck, his skin is melting away. One of his former crime buddies runs away from his abominable new appearance and he moans a faint 'help me' just before a car drives into him He literally explodes and gets splattered all over the windshield! And at that particular moment, the film's Academy Award for Best Sound Effect Editing doesn't hurt either - the weakness of the flesh in all its splendor.
