Another 90s animal classic (released the same year as Free Willy), Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey follows the story of Shadow, Chance and Sassy, who after being separated from their family, venture through the dangerous wilderness to find their way home. The animals are just bursting with so much personality that it would put any Michael Bay-directed character to shame. Shadow is the aging, wise and undyingly loyal dog, Chase is the bouncy and foolish, yet rebellious clown while Sassy plays the part of the confident and snobby cat. The trio have tremendous chemistry and connect with the audience in such a way you envision your own pets making this journey alongside them. The most uplifting moment in the film is Shadows return after falling into a ditch, and believing hes too old to escape it, accepts his fate and says goodbye. Its a moment that could prompt the coldest of hearts to reach for a tissue. Fortunately, Shadow finds the strength to go on and is reunited with his family alongside Chance and Sassy. The film just has a soul about it, and portrays the love and devotion a pet can have for their owner brilliantly, teaching us the true importance of home and family. You cant separate the three animals who come hand in hand (or paw in paw) with each other and they would make wonderful additions to any family.
