10 Awesome Movie Characters Ruined By Terrible Writing

7. Ellen Ripley - Alien Resurrection

Magneto X-Men
20th Century Fox

Though fans of the Alien franchise will never forgive what Alien 3 did to Newt (Carrie Henn) and Hicks (Michael Biehn) by killing them off-screen, at least they were given the opportunity to die with dignity, unlike series icon Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver).

Despite Alien 3 ending with Ripley taking a sacrificial dive into the molten drink to try and prevent Weyland-Yutani from retrieving the Xenomorph Queen growing inside of her, she was improbably brought back to life in the ridiculous sequel, Alien Resurrection.

200 years after her death, Ripley is cloned from blood taken prior to her demise, providing a laughable sub-fanfic excuse for Ripley to appear in yet another Alien movie.

Though Weaver's performance in the part is as strong as ever, Joss Whedon's script is forced to jump through hoops to explain Ripley's presence, such as revealing that the Xenomorphs have genetic memory, allowing this clone to possess some of Ripley's own memories.

With Neill Blomkamp's proposed direct sequel to Aliens being scrapped, it's looking increasingly likely that Resurrection will be the last big screen treatment Ripley will ever get - and that sucks.
