7. Poker (The Tao Of Steve)
Though it comes in hundreds if variants, poker is essentially a game in which players decide if their opponent is telling the truth or lying. Opponents use chips to bet against one another, with results varying from million dollar windfalls to life in the gutter. The indie film the Tao of Steve is philosophical, but unlike poker a deeper truth is rarely sought. Instead, Dex's philosophy is that of being emotionally detached and cool, for the sole purpose of scoring with the girls. "Steve" is not a person in the film; rather, he is a mindset and metaphor of the ultimate male. Steve McGarrett of Hawaii Five-O is one example. The Six Million Dollar Man Steve Austin is another. But as Dex and his pals explain to their lovelorn friend over a game of poker, the ultimate Steve is Mr. McQueen. Their card game serves as the backdrop for male bonding, in which the ways of the seemingly wiser men are broken down systematically for the more unknowing and naive friend. Like in cards, being lucky can be helpful, but outwitting another person can lead to greater potential upsides.
