7. Not Knowing Can Ruin The Film - The Usual Suspects
The Twist: Verbal Kint is Keyser Soze. The Usual Suspects has one of the greatest twists of all time. Believe it or not, that sentence in itself is a spoiler. But unlike another nineties classic on this list still come it can also spoil the enjoyment of the film. In many cases knowing theres a twist means you avidly obsess over all the clues a director has slipped in, but with The Usual Suspects youre most likely to just end up frustrated. Aside from a couple of sly moments (Keyser has thick piss in the opening just like Verbal said he has) theres little to grab onto. You get more involved with the twist than the plot and just end up frustrated. The films twist works because were dealing with an unreliable narrator, but its done so naturalistically we dont realise; even when Verbal has to add in the Kobayashi meeting it feels genuine to the chronology. If you know theres a twist on the way, however, its easy to not get hooked So for the love of all that is brilliant about this movie tell anyone who knows theres a twist what it is; youre saving them in the long run.
