It's not only the greatest twist in all of science-fiction; it's the greatest twist of all time! The first Star Wars film established that Luke's father died around the same time Darth Vader went to the Dark Side of the Force, but there was no indication Vader was his father.

Not only did the audience have no clue about Luke's parentage, but the cast was completely unaware as well. The line wasn't even in the script, and because all of Vader's lines were dubbed over by James Earl Jones in post, David Prowse could have said anything, and nobody on the set would have known.

Mark Hamill was the only person in the cast who knew the truth, and he spoke about it in an interview on the Star Wars website in September 2017:

"They kept that line secret: 'I am your father.'” What was in the script was already a fantastic twist. Vader says [in Darth Vader voice], 'You don’t know the truth. Obi-Wan killed your father.' And I played it just as you see it. 'No!' and all that. But [prior to shooting] they pulled me aside and [Irvin] Kershner, the director, said, 'Look, I’m going to tell you something. George knows, I know, and when I tell you, you’ll be the third person that knows. So if it leaks, we’ll know it’s you.'”
Hamill knew, so he could react appropriately, but he was the only one. It was one of the best twists in all of film history, and it was one of the greatest reveals of all time.
