M. Night Shyamalan made a name for himself with The Sixth Sense, and with this movie, he established himself as a director who is no stranger to twist endings. It was so well done in this movie, it became his calling card, and very few of his movies don't involve a twist of some type.

The Sixth Sense opens with Child Psychologist Malcolm Crowe and his wife returning home to find a young man in their bedroom with a gun. He was a patient of Crowe's, and he blamed his former doctor for everything that went wrong in his life, so he shot him in the belly.

The scene changes to some time later, and Malcolm has clearly recovered to take on a new case involving a young boy named Cole, who can see dead people. The boy is often frightened by the people he sees, and many of the ghosts are violent, resulting in various injuries.

As Malcolm works to help Cole, his own life could use some fixing, as his relationship with his wife has cooled, and they are no longer speaking. Eventually, Malcolm realizes why his wife is no longer speaking to him -- he's been dead since the first scene.

Malcolm was a ghost all along, and it took his realizing this before he could move on. Interestingly, there were subtle hints about his fate throughout the entire movie, including a line by Cole, where he said, "I see dead people [...] they're everywhere [...] they don't know they're dead."
