In The Others, Nicole Kidman plays Grace, a mother to two young children afflicted with an allergy to sunlight. The film takes place during WWII, and Grace's husband has gone missing, leaving her alone with the children. She hires on a nanny and groundskeeper to help, and strange things begin happening around the house.

The curtains, which must be closed at all times for the children's safety, are often opened without explanation. This drives Grace near to madness in an effort to find out what's been going on, but more strange things continue to happen that make her believe something supernatural is going on.

When she approaches her child playing on the floor with a veil over her face, she lifts it to see a frightening old woman in her place, but only for a moment. Eventually, the father returns, and he's angry with Grace, but mostly, he's just sad, and he doesn't stay for long, and the curtains go with him.

Soon after, she discovers that her servants died on the property long ago, but they are still there, so she believes they are responsible for everything. Just when it seems there is a proper explanation for it all, the twist comes.

Grace finds a group of people conducting a séance with the old woman working as a medium. Grace and the children were ghosts all along, and after she learned her husband had perished in the war, she killed her children and herself. They were haunting the house all along.
