10 Awesome Movie Twists You Never Saw Coming

7. Fight Club - Tyler Durden Isn't Real

Fight Club Narrator
20th Century Fox

Fight Club is one of those movies where you think you know what's going on from the beginning, but as the plot unfolds, you realize you're just as clueless as the main character. That's a character who doesn't even have a name, and despite watching the movie for more than an hour, most viewers didn't even register that fact.

He's simply the narrator, which is how Edward Norton is credited in the end credits. Despite not knowing what his name was, it was clear that he had some issues, and was best friends with the enigmatic Tyler Durden, the man with whom he started the titular clandestine activity.

Just as the film switches into the third act, the narrator is floored to learn that Tyler Durden isn't only not real, but it was him all along! A quick series of flashbacks confirm this by showing the narrator speaking to himself, punching himself, and recreating scenes as Tyler.

It's a phenomenal twist, but the best part is that it was hinted at throughout the entire film — it's just that nobody bothered to notice. Even before Durden hits the screen, he flashes up a few times in a single frame, and this was even discussed as something he enjoyed doing with pictures of male genitalia in family films.

There are dozens of clues, which make it completely obvious that Tyler Durden wasn't real, but the film was so masterfully made, nearly everyone watching Fight Club the first time managed to miss every one of them.
