10 Awesome Movies From 2017 You Probably Missed

4. The Girl With All The Gifts

Based on M.R. Carey's brilliant novel of the same name, the film adaptation of The Girl With All the Gifts hit cinemas last year and then just sort of disappeared into the ether, never to be heard from again. Which is a huge shame, given that this is well-made thriller with a ton of ideas - and several great performances - at its core.

The story takes place some time in the near future, when much of the human populace have been decimated by an unknown pathogen, and the survivors live together in a strange army base where children are kept and treated like experiments. To explain more than that would spoil the film's many surprises, but let's just say that nothing going on here is quite as it appears.

Made at a low cost of just under £5 million and starring Gemma Arterton and Paddy Considine, The Girl With All the Gifts barely made a dent at the box office, though director Colm McCarthy certainly made the most of the tiny budget, crafting something tense, mysterious and - at times - genuinely horrific.

Yes, there are lots of other films in The Girl With All the Gifts, such as Alex Garland's 28 Days Later, and John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids, but it all comes together with such precision that it winds up feeling both intelligent and original.
