5. The Red Turtle

Wind River
Wild Bunch/Studio Ghibli

There is no dialogue in this beautifully animated, atmospheric work, which follows the course of a man's life after he is stranded on a beautiful island in the middle of nowhere with only the titular "red turtle" for company.

The movie opens with said man coming to terms with his new existence, learning the ropes of his environment, alone within a tropical island paradise. After a while, though, the film transforms into something more: a sad and heartbreaking meditation on loneliness, nature, and - perhaps most surprisingly - family.

The Red Turtle is a Japanese-French-Belgian production, made in Paris, written and directed by Dutch filmmaker Michael Dudok de Wit. All those nationalities could have made for something at odds with itself, but instead The Red Turtle feels like a collaborative masterpiece (and one deserving of a lot more attention).

Everything from the animation to the emotional musical score is lovingly rendered, whilst the story - seemingly simple - has a quiet, haunting power... so much so, in fact, that months after seeing this, it still has the power the bring you to tears.
