10 Awesome Movies From 2017 You Probably Missed
2. Raw
Made in 2016 but not given an overseas theatrical release until 2017, Raw is without question one of the best and most original horror movies in decades. Just ask Observer film critic Mark Kermode, who knows horror movies better than most, and went on to name it the best film of 2017. Quite the accolade, you'll agree.
Even if Raw isn't the best picture of last year, it's up there. Starring Garance Marillier (who at just nineteen puts in a truly sensational performance), Raw centres on a teenager who develops a sudden craving for human flesh. Written and directed by Julia Ducournau, the movie is by turns comic, shocking, violent, and erotic. This is especially impressive because the film is actually Ducournau's debut.
Those who love the body horror films of David Cronenberg are sure to find a kindred spirit in this obsessive, macabre display of cannibal tendencies at play. What sets Raw apart from being pure schlock, however, is the beauty of the cinematography, the performances, and the musical score. You also get the sense that Ducournau is keen to get something off her chest. What exactly... well, it's up to you to work it out.
Having pulled in just £3.1 million at the box office, Raw hasn't been seen anywhere near as much as it deserves. If you're yet to see it, you owe yourself a viewing.
