1. Lady MacBeth

No, not an adaptation of the famous Shakespeare play, though the reason for the title becomes wholly apparent the moment you sit down to watch this strange, macabre drama set in a stately home in 19th century rural England. Directed by William Oldroyd, it's without a doubt one of the year's best movies.

Lady MacBeth centres on Katherine, a beautiful young women whose life has already been mapped out for her: she'll marry a man she doesn't love, and live out her days as the lady of a large estate. One day, however, she stumbles upon the Heathcliff-like Sebastian working in the stables, and his rough, aggressive manner - he is the very opposite of Katherine's husband - sparks a sexual fire inside of her.

What follows thereafter is best kept in the dark, though this film packs a mighty punch for its 89 minute length, forcing you to alternately root for and rally against Katherine as plots her revenge. It's the kind of film you watch with your hands covering your eyes, perpetually sensing something terrible is just minutes away.

Beautifully shot by Ari Wegner, the film's most impressive element is lead actor Florence Pugh, who is never anything but mesmerising in the titular role and a performer no doubt destined for great things. Hell hath no fury, indeed.
