3. The Tale

Had The Tale not aired on HBO shortly after premiering at last year's Sundance Film Festival, it likely would've been in Oscar contention in every major category.

A gut-wrenching film in which writer-director Jennifer Fox dramatises her own historic sexual abuse, The Tale is an extremely difficult sit, but also a vital one in understanding the psychology behind both abusers and the abused.

The performances are uniformly stunning across the board, especially Isabelle Nélisse and Laura Dern as young and old iterations of the protagonist, but also a never-better Jason Ritter as her abuser.

Despite the queasy subject matter, critical praise was near-universal, with just a single negative review on the Tomatometer from Roger Catlin, who compared the film to "an off-putting Lifetime movie."
