10 Awesome Performances In Otherwise Awful 2017 Movies

7. Tom Hanks – The Circle

Based on the Dave Eggers novel, The Circle stars Emma Watson as a bright young thing who nabs herself a job at a powerful tech company (the titular Circle) that definitely isn’t based on Google or Apple and is hawking a new all-seeing, sinister social media product.

In the age of social media omnipresence, it’s a timely topic but ultimately what promise The Circle showed prior to its release fell under its half-arsed exploration of the potential evils of the Information Age that – quite frankly – has been done a lot better elsewhere (see Black Mirror) and a rather weak performance from Watson.

As per usual Tom Hanks is on form, however, playing against type as the affably villainous and charismatic co-founder and CEO of the titular company and using his persona as the nicest guy in Hollywood to lull us into trusting his character. It’s just a shame the rest of the movie didn’t match up to Hanks’ performance.
