10 Awesome Performances In Otherwise Awful 2017 Movies
3. Ben Kingsley & Anthony Hopkins – Collide
British director Eran Creevy showed promise with his 2000
debut feature Shifty but his sophomore movie Welcome to the Punch was a bit of
a let-down and the start of a seemingly downward spiral if the quality of his
latest film – the not-so-thrilling crime thriller Collide – is anything to go
by.
Starring Nicholas Hoult and Felicity Jones as two young Yanks slumming it in Germany, Collide’s silly plot – something about drug smuggling, kidney failure, autobahn car chases and true love – and laughable dialogue earned it the dubious distinction of being one of 2017’s biggest box office flops.
Brit thesps and supporting stars Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins are an over-the-top joy to watch, however. Kingsley, who plays a Turkish drug lord named Geran that lives in a gold-plated trailer and has a penchant for John Travolta, and Hopkins – an erudite businessman named Hagen Kahl who uses his profession as a front for smuggling drugs – obviously couldn’t give a flying f**k about how silly the whole thing is and embrace the absurdity of the film and their characters.
Unfortunately, Kingsley and Hopkins only get a couple of scenes together but seeing the two go head-to-head and try to out-ham each other is almost worth watching the rest of the movie.
