6. Totally Killer (2023)

Direct-to-streaming films don't exactly have a great hit rate in terms of quality, and doubly so for horror release, but once in a while there is a diamond in the slurry and guts. Enter Totally Killer, Amazon MGM's time travelling slasher that takes Gen Z Jamie Hughes (Kiernan Shipka) back to 1987, to save her mother and her mother's school friends from being killed by the masked Sweet 16 Killer.

The film parodies and pays homage to the trappings of '80s horror along the way. Unlike the slashers of the '80s, however, this one doesn't have a lot of re-watch value. It is thrilling on the first go round, but the killer reveal and expositional ending don't leave enough to the imagination.

As with many slashers post-Scream, there are two villains - one, the original killer, is a disgruntled boyfriend out to avenge his dead girlfriend; the other a podcaster from the present day seeking to boost his numbers. By the end of the film, both are unmasked and either dead or on a totally different path (wibbly wobbly timelines), and all plot threads have been well and truly tied off. A satisfying conclusion, sure, but no reason to return to the film for another look.
