10 Awesome Recent Movies Nobody Saw Coming

3. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

Who among us expected the fourth Bridget Jones movie to make it on any lists about awesome films?

The series felt like it tied itself off just fine with 2016's Bridget Jones's Baby, and many fans were immediately concerned when the fourth film was confirmed to be adapting the highly divisive third novel, Mad About the Boy.

It all came down to the fact that this story kicks off with the death of Bridget's (Renee Zellweger) much-loved husband Mark Darcy (Hugh Grant) - an undeniable bummer which many felt robbed the third novel of the series' characteristic charm.

Yet as a film, Mad About the Boy is actually a surprisingly effective tale about grief.

Sure, it's less funny and frothy than the previous three films, but it still overflows with charm thanks to the central performances - especially Zellweger - before seemingly closing the book on Bridget's story once and for all.

Considering how easily this sequel could've been a miserable capper to the franchise, it's impressive how nimbly it pivoted into a happy-sad finale.
