10 Awesome Recent Movies That Must Never Get Sequels
10. War For The Planet Of The Apes
Matt Reeves' trilogy-capping entry into the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise was everything a blockbuster threequel needed to be: insanely epic, an action-packed triumph of stunning visual effects, and devastatingly heartfelt.
Reeves and Andy Serkis served up a near-perfect finale to Caesar's arc across the three films, proving that movies about gun-totting apes battling humanity don't need to be brainless schlock.
It's also a tidy enough ending that it doesn't really necessitate any more movies: the humans have effectively been vanquished, ape-kind will thrive and Caesar's legacy as a fallen hero is firmly bolstered. A sequel would be cynical overkill at this point.
Will It Happen?: Not a direct sequel, no. Fox is apparently flirting with the possibility of a spin-off movie starring a supporting ape character, though considering that War ended up grossing over $200 million less than its predecessor, it seems unlikely these plans will actually go ahead.
There's no way the series is done forever, of course, so while we'll probably get a reboot-sequel within the next decade, chances of a straight follow-up to War are mercifully slim.
