10 Awesome Scenes In Awful Movies

6. Mickey Rourke's Monologue - The Expendables

This is one scene I am never going to understand, because it seems so at odds with the rest of the film. Sly Stallone's The Expendables is by any regular measure of a film, pretty awful, even as it delivers a few sleazy, low-brow thrills. However, mid-film, Mickey Rourke's character Tool delivers a monologue to Stallone's Barney Ross that's so thoughtful and packed with emotion that it nearly derails the sense of fun entirely. Tool recalls a failed attempt by him to save a girl, delivered with such brilliant conviction by the Oscar-nominated actor that it feels like it belongs in another film entirely. It's a great scene, and one can see why Sly just let Rourke go with it, but seriously, this film is meant to be dumb fun, not a morose meditation on hot girls who couldn't be saved.
