10 Awesome Things In The Best Summer Movie Season Ever‏

5. Tom Cruise Keeps Dying - Edge Of Tomorrow

The Scene: You've heard the pitch for Edge Of Tomorrow a hundred times at this point, but it bears repeating: it's a sci-fi action movie version of Groundhog Day. Tom Cruise plays an unlucky, craven Army PR bloke who is forced into fighting on the frontline against an alien invasion of Earth. That's despite him having any training at all, least of all with the mech suits this future military are equipped with. Consequently, when he's dropped into the middle of the fighting, he gets taken out like a chump. Except then he wakes up and, it turns out, he keeps waking up every time he dies. He seeks out Emily Blunt's badass super soldier, who briefly wielded the same power, so she can train him up. Which means dying a lot more. Why It's Awesome: It's been a while since Cruise has been a bankable property in Hollywood. Following the Scientology stuff, that disastrous appearance on Oprah and some poor acting choices (did anybody actually see Knight and Day?), he'd been toppled as the go-to movie superstar. Which is why it was so much fun seeing him subvert his crumbling squeaky clean public persona as not only a totally cowardly character but one who gets killed off with more regularity than Kenny in South Park, a pretty morbid running joke to get in a mainstream blockbuster. He gets shot by Emily Blunt repeatedly, exploded in battle, and even - in one particularly darkly hilarious moment - accidentally rolls under the tires of a Jeep. Also the rest of the film is brilliant and you should go see it. Now!
