10 Awesome Trailers The Movie Just Couldn't Live Up To

6. Godzilla (1998)

Godzilla is such an iconic character he just seems to lend himself to atmospheric teaser trailers that get the hype machine into full gear. At the end of last year the first teaser for Gareth Edwards' version hit and it got everyone excited for what had previously seemed a superfluous reboot. Even if you found the finished product a little lacklustre (although how you could think that third act monster showdown was disappointing we don't know), be thankful it wasn't as thunderous a let down as what Roland Emmerich delivered in 1998. With not just one but two awesome teaser trailers with a slow build up to a climax that was essentially just saying "there's a new Godzilla", the marketing for the film was incredibly smart, with even the more explosive trailers keeping the design of this version of the monster a total secret. It was a smart campaign that left so much unexplained that you felt you had to see the film; a tactic that was repeated on the much better Cloverfield. The film itself had none of the stylistic smarts the adverts did, lazily ripping ideas from popular movies of the time and stuffing itself so full of nineties clichés that it quickly dated; the line "the network is on an internet" is delivered with total sincerity. The adverts did get one thing right; you certainly didn't see the monster all that much. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdVF74zEEfE
