10 Awesome Trailers The Movie Just Couldn't Live Up To

5. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

If you're finding the endless hype around Star Wars Episode VII, a film with an incomplete title, no official plot details and the majority of info coming from tweets of small parts of props, you best be thankful you can't remember 1999. Although the excitement for Star Wars 7 (actually the eighth movie) will no doubt become as world-consuming as a Death Star laser come late-2015, it probably won't reach the same levels as Episode I. Before the fan-base turned on George Lucas because his space fantasy wasn't aimed entirely at thirty-somethings, The Phantom Menace was one of the most eagerly anticipated movies of time and its trailer only pushed it over the edge. Using classic elements from John Williams' original trilogy score it starts with calm, slow shots intercut with the film's incredibly grand tagline ("Every Generation Has A Legend. Every Journey Has A First Step. Every Saga Has A Beginning."), then explodes into action, creating an element of familiarity (Obi-Wan! Yoda! Lightsabers!) while also feeling incredibly new (Battle Droids! Jar Jar! Little Boy!). J.J. can only dream his film will have something this good. We've gone on record recently stating the prequels aren't the bastard child of the franchise many would have you believe, but there's no denying that the film couldn't live up to the sheer thrill of the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6hOlI9cg4o
